Women And Words: Lesbian Erotic Fairy Tales And Jove’s New Electric Toy

April 30, 2017

Women and Words

22-28 April 2017

Jove got herself a new electronic device that she’s totally in love with (but it’s not what you think!!!!). Also, lesbian erotic fairy tales is a thing. Oh, and both really like it when the young folks talk to the old(er) about their perceptions of queer culture and community and they think it’s such a good idea to share experiences and ideas.

22 April: Author Anna Larner joined us to discuss her debut novel with Bold Strokes Books, Highland Fling. She also did a giveaway, because we are big into giveaways.

ALSO, call for submissions, hashtagqueer.com. Keep them in mind for future reference, too.

23 April: Author and editor Sacchi Green joined us to chat about her latest edited anthology through Cleis Press, Witches, Princesses, and Women and Arms: Erotic Lesbian Fairy Tales. And she did a giveaway!

24 April: Author and Women and Wordster Yvonne Heidt shared a bit of her creative process, and we think it’s super cool when authors do that.

25 April: Author, Women and Wordster and national lesbian treasure Lee Lynch did something really cool and posted an interview with a young woman in high school who is working on a project about being a gay activist in the 1960s. Give this one a read, friends, because the more community we build across generations, the better for all.

27 April: Author and Women and Wordster Renée Bess joined us to discuss language – a “pulsing, living, changing entity that adjusts itself to fit new environments.”

28 April: Author and Women and Wordster Andi Marquette fangirled over a discontinued Marvel comic, Fearless Defenders. But she sure dug the 13 issues of a team of women superheroes with lots of WOC rep and some lesbian rep.  (special thanks to horror/bizarre author Gina Ranalli for telling me to read it),

Also, Jove would like readers out there to know that if they’re interested in writing a blog from a reader’s perspective to please hit her up. We love it when readers share their thoughts on books they’re reading.

And author and publisher Amanda Radley (who recently launched Heartsome Publishing) has a lesbian and bi women fiction questionnaire she’d like you to participate in, to get a sense of the lesbian and bi women’s fiction market. Results will be collated and made available to publishers and indie authors with a view to help improve the lesbian and bi fiction market for all.

Lesbian Historic Motif Project: Mademoiselle de Richelieu

April 29, 2017

The Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast

Episode 9 - The Travels and Adventures of Mademoiselle de Richelieu

This mid-18th century novel tells the story of two women romping through Europe in male disguise, breaking hearts, having narrow escapes, falling in love with each other, and ending up deciding to share the rest of their lives together. The 18th century prose is rather dense, but I’ve tried to pick selections that show why I find it fascinating.

In this episode we talk about

  • The historic context of the novel
  • An overall plot summary
  • Readings of selected excerpts that illustrate the romantic relationship between the two main characters

More info

The Lesbian Historic Motif Project lives here

The full text of The Travels and Adventures of Mademoiselle de Richelieu is accessible primarily through academic libraries, but is available in electronic facsimile. WorldCat has the following listings for it

This topic is discussed in one or more entries of the Lesbian Historic Motif Project here

The lesbian Review Podcast: 10 Lesfic Women Who Will Kick Your Ass

April 28, 2017

The Lesbian Review Podcast

10 Lesfic Women Who Will Kick Your Ass

In this episode Sheena is Joined by Brooklyn, fellow reviewer and all round awesome person, and we are talking about 10 lesbian fiction women who will kick your ass.

We love reading action, adventures and other books with awesome heroines who can get some serious stuff done. So we decided to go through some of our favorite kick ass characters.

Sheena’s List

1 Ruby from The Only Way by Jamie Sullivan

The Only Way is set is a bleak, poverty stricken world.

The city holds the wealth and opulence of those with too much money and no caring for anyone else. Next to it is the alley, a sector much poorer than the city but a veritable palace in comparison to the Gutter where the poorest residents live.

Each section is blocked off from the others with security guards, fences and gates that need passes.

Our main character, Heart, lives in the Gutter. To make ends meet her father is a fighter. Fighters earn more than many of the residents who pick up bits of metal and thrown away appliances that have landed in the trash heap.

Fighting is dangerous, though and when her father doesn’t come home from a fight she had to figure out how to keep her family alive. Her mother was injured in a work accident and is not healthy enough to find work, even if there were jobs available, and the oldest of the three younger siblings is only twelve years in age.

She looks for work, but knows that she will only find work on her back. In a desperate bid to feed her family she cuts her hair, pretends to be a boy and enters the world of no-holds-barred fighting.

Initially she is dismissed by Arena owners until one man decides to give her a chance and takes her on to train her. It is at his Arena, in the Alley, where she meets his daughter, Ruby.

Ruby trains Hart to fight and they develop a strong friendship. As they grow closer, Hart finds it increasingly difficult to keep up the appearance of being a boy.

2 Jack from Depths Of Blue by Lise MacTague

Torrin is a smuggler who is always looking for the next big score. When she hears about a civil war, on a relatively isolated planet, she can’t help but see the money she can make.

Jak is one of the best snipers in the male-only-army, Hiding the fact that she is a woman is not always easy but it is necessary. Little does she know that her mission to kill and off-world smugger will lead to big decisions and an unexpected attraction.

This is the life-and-death adventure of two women who not only fight their way through enemy territory, battle fatigue and the local wildlife but then have to escape from the not so friendly allies as well.

This is the story of fallen DEA angel, Jude Lucien and the Miami Herald reporter determined to unearth Jude’s secrets. When an apparently happenstance meeting introduces Jude to reporter Liz Gardener. The dark DEA ex-agent is both intrigued and aroused by the young woman.

A sniper shot intended for Jude strikes Liz and the two women are thrown together in a race to discover who is intent on killing Jude. As their lives become more and more intertwined, Jude finds herself unexpectedly falling for the reporter and Liz discovers that the agent-turned-drug-dealer is both more and less than she seems.

5 Kade from Prayer Of The Handmaiden by Merry Shannon

Erinda and Kadrian (Kade) are the main characters of this novel. Kade is appointed as a spiritual warrior by the Goddess Ithyris. Everyone is mystified, including Kadrian herself since she isn’t particularly outspoken or warrior-like.

Through the book the backstory evolves and we discover that Erinda and Kade were childhood sweethearts, but the priestesses cannot be romantically involved and Kade had to leave Erinda when she joined the service of the Goddess seven years before.

But Erinda is never quite able to get over losing Kade and in a desperate attempt to forget her childhood sweetheart she flees her job at the palace to join the army that is headed for war with the Barbarians who have crossed into the Gossesses lands. Women And Words: Fine Art, Eyeball Replacements and 80s TV Trivia

April 23, 2017

Women and Words

Podcast overview 16-21 April 2017

Jove demonstrates her knowledge of fine art while Andi wonders when medical science will be able to replace eyeballs like in that movie Minority Report with Tom Cruise. Andi also wonders if there’s a trivia game show out there that specializes in 1970s and 80s TV because R.G. Emanuelle would for sure win.

16 April: Author Lise Gold joined us to discuss her novel Lily’s Fire and the concept of “wonderment.” And Jove wanted me to include the link to Picasso’s “Blue Nude,” which you will totally understand why when you listen to the podcast. LOL

20 April: Author and Women and Wordster R.G. Emanuelle would like to have a little downtime to watch some of the cool TV shows she hears the rest of us yammering on about. Fun fact about R.G.: she’s a walking encyclopedia of TV trivia for shows in the 70s and 80s. She’d probably do okay with shows in the 60s and 90s, too. And she’s seen probably every B-horror movie out there.

Not So Straight Sue by Cheyenne Blue

Synopsis

Back in the country of her birth, she is finally able to accept who she is, including facing Denise, the woman who burned her so badly years ago and set her on the path of pretence. Courting the Countess by Jenny Frame

Sheena, founder and queen of The Lesbian Review and The Lesbian Talk Show channel, joins Tara to talk about a mutual favourite book, Courting the Countess by Jenny Frame. Check it out to hear why they both love it so much, what’s so fabulous about Annie Brannigan, and what spinoff book Tara thinks Jenny Frame should write.

From the back of the book

Professor of Archeology Henrietta “Harry” Knight becomes Countess of Axedale upon her father’s death and takes a sabbatical from Cambridge University to begin refurbishing the long-neglected and run-down Axedale Hall. The child of a loveless marriage, witness to her father’s infidelities and her mother’s pain, Harry has no intention of ever falling in love.

Annie Brannigan is a survivor, remaining positive through hardships. As an agency housekeeper, she moves from post to post with her daughter Riley, taking care of people who have everything she will never have. Annie’s greatest wish is to find her happy ever after.

April 13, 2017

Curves Welcome

Life Lessons I’d Share with My Younger Self

Novelist and Motivational Blogger Suzie Carr talks about pivotal life lessons she’d share with her younger self.

Join Suzie as she explores the following life lessons she’s learned along the way:

  • Confidence originates inside not outside.
  • You can’t force what isn’t meant to be.
  • Have a great Plan A, and even a little plan B on the side.
  • Take care of yourself first so you can take care of others.
  • Everything is temporary.
