In this episode we hear a reading from One Way Or Another by A.L. Brooks

Synopsis

"Corporate lawyer Sarah Connolly keeps her love life simple—no strings, no complications, and definitely no falling in love. It works for her, even if it’s getting a little, well, boring.

Demure teacher Bethany Keane has been out of the dating pool for ages but is ready to dip her toe back in. She would love to be swept off her feet by some beautiful, romantic soul.

A chance encounter outside a sex shop in London draws the unlikely pair together and the attraction is immediate and powerful. But how can two people so different even connect, let alone fall in love? Can Ms. Wrong ever be right?

A fun, sexy, lesbian romance about finding yourself and discovering not what we want, but what we need."

Episode 27c: Sappho: The Translations (reprised)

October 20, 2018

Sappho: The Translations (reprised)

The Lesbian Historic Motif Podcast - Episode 27c

Due to scheduling issues, I’m reprising a pair of shows I aired two years ago about Sappho and her poetry. I hope you enjoy either revisiting this material or discovering it for the first time.

In this episode we talk about

  • How much poetry did Sappho write, and how much survives? Why was it lost, and why were the bits we have preserved?
  • What was the changing image of Sappho from the middle ages through the 19th century? How did people reconcile their admiration for Sappho’s poetry and their disapproval of homosexuality?
  • Who translated Sappho’s works and how did their opinions of her affect those translations?

The show will include recitations of the following poems:

  • Ode to Aphrodite & Fragment #31: Jane McIntosh Snyder from Lesbian Desire in the Lyrics of Sappho (20th century)
  • “On a Lady Named Beloved” inspired by fragment #31: Anne de Rohan (1617), translated from the French
  • Fragment #31: John Hall (1652)
  • Fragment #31: Joseph Addison (1735)
  • Ode to Aphrodite & Fragment #31: Abrose Philips (1748)
  • “Eleanore” inspired by Fragment #31: Lord Tennyson (1832)
  • Fragment #31 & “Imitation of Sappho” inspired by Fragment #31: Mary Hewitt (1845)

This Time by SW Andersen

Book Clips

Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet.

In this episode we hear a reading from the author.

Synopsis for This Time by SW Andersen

Some people believe love transcends time and space.

Neuropsychologist Dr. Contessa “Tess” Kenner isn’t one of them. She can explain in detail how lust and desire cause the limbic system to battle the prefrontal cortex over ethical decision making, but ask her about her aversion to relationships and she’s completely at a loss. It’s not due to lack of trying. She’s just never felt the need or the connection to put in the effort.

Free spirited artist Elena Jake, on the other hand, wants to fall in love with the woman of her dreams—quite literally. Ever since her youth, her nights have been consumed by a beautiful stranger, so much so, that no flesh and blood woman has ever been able to measure up. When the lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, she seeks guidance from her Native American roots.

Driven by strong astrological influences, the “powers that be” attempt an intervention between the two women. Their pasts and presents merge, sending Tess and Elena on an unimaginable journey, causing them both to question their sanities.

Will these two souls rediscover an epic love?

Or are they destined to forever be star-crossed lovers?

This romance is a must read for every true romantic who believes love knows no bounds.

Sheena Gets Interviewed by Natalie Miller-Snell

October 4, 2018

Sheena Gets Interviewed

Seize the Day Podcast

Welcome to Seize the Day Podcast with Natalie Miller-Snell.   I’m super excited about this show.  One of the motivators for starting Seize the Day, was to get inspirational women on the show and talk through how they found success and what got them to the point they are at now.  In today’s show, I get to interview Sheena Lemos Ebersohn, founder of the The Lesbian Review and The Lesbian Talk Show.  We discuss Sheena’s journey and how the TLR and Talk Show came to be.  We talk websites, Requiem for Immortals and we learn a little about more about Sheena.

This was a really important podcast for me to do - finding the TLR changed my life, for the better.  I’ve met some wonderful friends through this great community, had so many great books recommended and I am here now, podcasting, which I would never have imagined.  Sheena has set up something truly wonderful with the TLR and Talk Show, and it’s really great to hear her take on it.

Seize the Day was inspired by my favourite Latin expression Carpe Diem.  I’m very much a “glass is half full” person and I’ve had some great mentors throughout my life, who have offered me invaluable guidance.  We have so many wonders at our fingertips and sometimes we just need a little help, or someone to remind us.

Musings Of A Madwoman by Jazzy Mitchell - Book Clips

September 26, 2018

Musings Of A Madwoman by Jazzy Mitchell

Book Clips

Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet.

In this episode we hear a reading from Musings Of A Madwoman by Jazzy Mitchell

Synopsis

Three women’s lives interweave as they struggle to navigate life and love. And the effects of a meteorite.

Patricia Steitz, a successful romance writer, is flabbergasted when Rudi Singlewood shows up at one of her book signings and initiates a summer romance. She worries that the fantasies she’s harbored regarding the world-renown Broadway actress may prevent her from accepting who Rudi really is. She relates her fears to her best friend, Marcia Struthers, a successful Manhattan litigator.

Knowing that Patricia has dreamed of Rudi for years, Marcia urges her to give the actress a chance by getting to know who she is behind her public persona. While working a high-profile case, Marcia must confront her resurging feelings for lead opposing counsel, Lexie Yamin, and the appearance of an unrequited love. All is not as it seems, however, as Marcia deals with unexpected physical changes and developing mental abilities after an encounter with a meteorite. Marcia’s not the only one dealing with changes induced by an extraterrestrial rock, though.

Kiernan Connelly, who has received intriguing letters over several months, begins to question her lifestyle. Her casual sexual relationship with Rudi and passable acting career no longer fulfill her. As Kiernan makes changes in her life, she finds herself dealing with the strange reality of being able to hear others’ thoughts. Could it be related to her close encounter with a meteorite?

Wynonna Earp, Season 2

September 21, 2018

Episode 40: Wynonna Earp Season 2

(Note: Because of the way this episode was recorded, the audio isn't as clean as usual. Everything is audible, but some of the hiccups that get edited out couldn't be this time.)

Andi managed to get Lise into the paranormal Canadian awesome that is Wynonna Earp and now here they are doing a talk about Season 2, which gave more of everything that is so good about the show, but also delved even more into the relationships between characters and introduced a few more—one becomes part of our Earp posse, the other proves a nice foil for Doc Holliday and the others prove to be amazing paranormal villain-types.

Both Andi and Lise love how the writing of the show is so strong and weaves so many subplots into the main themes and narratives and how you miss things the first time through and when you re-watch, it’s a richer experience, in some ways, than the first time through because you then see how the threads of the show are woven together so tightly and how the character arcs evolve.

Andi and Lise talk about Season 1 of Wynonna Earp

ALSO! IF YOU ARE UK-BASED, HERE’S A CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE IN AN IMPORTANT SURVEY.

Details, via Alison Condron at the LGBT Foundation in Manchester:

I work for the Women’s Programme at LGBT Foundation in Manchester. We have just launched a major piece of research into the sexual wellbeing of women who have sex with women.

As part of our annual health campaign for lesbian and bisexual women, we are working closely with renowned researcher Professor Catherine Meads - who has been conducting research into LGBT health needs since 1992 – to launch a large-scale survey asking women who have sex with women* (WSW) about their experiences centred around sexual wellbeing.

This survey aims to look past a clinical approach to sexual health to consider other key factors including pleasure, exploration, health, behaviour, access to services, confidence, and consent. This survey will run from August-November 2018 and will be followed by themed national focus groups later in the year, based on preliminary survey findings.

You can read more information about it and access the survey here: bit.ly/WSWsurvey2018

Thank you!

Mother Of Souls by Heather Rose Jones

Book Clips

Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet.

In this episode we hear a reading from Mother Of Souls by Heather Rose Jones by the author

Synopsis

At last! Return to the enchanted realm of Alpennia for the eagerly awaited sequel to Daughter of Mystery and The Mystic Marriage.

All her life, Serafina Talarico has searched in vain for a place where she and her mystical talents belong. She never found it in Rome—the city of her birth—where her family’s Ethiopian origins marked them as immigrants. After traveling halfway across Europe to study with Alpennia’s Royal Thaumaturgist, her hopes of finding a home among Margerit Sovitre’s circle of scholars are dashed, for Serafina can perceive, but not evoke, the mystical forces of the Mysteries of the Saints and even Margerit can’t awaken her talents.

When Serafina takes lodgings with Luzie Valorin, widowed music teacher and aspiring composer, both their lives are changed forever. Luzie’s music holds a power to rival the Mysteries, and Serafina alone has the vision to guide her talents. For sorcery threatens the fate of Alpennia—indeed of all of Europe—locking the mountains in a malevolent storm meant to change the course of history. Alpennia’s mystic protections are under attack and the key to survival may lie in the unlikeliest of places: Luzie’s ambition to write an opera on the life of the medieval philosopher Tanfrit.
