Women and Words: Can someone put a tracking chip on Andi?

October 7, 2018

Women and Words Sept 29 - Oct 5

Once again, Andi is off being a world traveller, something you'd think she'd give up since every time she goes on an adventure, she leaves me here to manage all this on my own. I, of course, recruited my friend (and she IS my friend regardless of what she might say to the contrary) Ashley Bartlett. She, of course, said yes. What follows is the result. You should all encourage Andi to stay home from now on.

Interview with Fangirl Shirts

October 5, 2018

Episode 41

This week, Andi chats with the owners of Fangirl Shirts, Rebecca Barrick and Sally Heaven, who “make awesome shirts by, for and about women.” They launched the company four years ago as a way to celebrate fangirls and fan culture through T-shirts and other swag, doing cool things like spelling out the word “fangirl” in the font of a particular show title and immortalizing lines from shows or the fandoms on shirts and swag.

Fangirl Shirts is also committed to community works, and a portion of profits go to non-profits that support girls and/or women. They also do special edition shirts that benefit a specific cause or organization (try the Queer Thunder and Peacemaker swaggery, for example) and they’re the organizers of the ClexaCon fun-run, an event they just launched at the second ClexaCon (the largest queer women and allies in media con) held in April, 2018. They’re already planning for the next, and they have all kinds of projects they’re working on, which makes Andi an even bigger fangirl of them.

Sheena Gets Interviewed

Seize the Day Podcast

Welcome to Seize the Day Podcast with Natalie Miller-Snell.   I’m super excited about this show.  One of the motivators for starting Seize the Day, was to get inspirational women on the show and talk through how they found success and what got them to the point they are at now.  In today’s show, I get to interview Sheena Lemos Ebersohn, founder of the The Lesbian Review and The Lesbian Talk Show.  We discuss Sheena’s journey and how the TLR and Talk Show came to be.  We talk websites, Requiem for Immortals and we learn a little about more about Sheena.

This was a really important podcast for me to do - finding the TLR changed my life, for the better.  I’ve met some wonderful friends through this great community, had so many great books recommended and I am here now, podcasting, which I would never have imagined.  Sheena has set up something truly wonderful with the TLR and Talk Show, and it’s really great to hear her take on it.

Seize the Day was inspired by my favourite Latin expression Carpe Diem.  I’m very much a “glass is half full” person and I’ve had some great mentors throughout my life, who have offered me invaluable guidance.  We have so many wonders at our fingertips and sometimes we just need a little help, or someone to remind us.

Curves Welcome - How to Manage Time Effectively

If you are the type who says yes to everyone because you don’t want to let them down or seem like you’re not being a team player, you’re going to get hurt. By hurt I mean, you’re going to burn out. It’s as simple as that. The more demands you let others toss on you, the less time you have to be the best version of yourself. You can’t add value to your family, friends, volunteer organization, or job if you’re heading for a nervous breakdown.

Tune in to learn how to take back control of your day.

Musings Of A Madwoman by Jazzy Mitchell - Book Clips

September 26, 2018

Musings Of A Madwoman by Jazzy Mitchell

Book Clips

Welcome to Book Clips, the mini podcast where authors and narrators give you a taste of a book with a short snippet.

In this episode we hear a reading from Musings Of A Madwoman by Jazzy Mitchell

Synopsis

Three women’s lives interweave as they struggle to navigate life and love. And the effects of a meteorite.

Patricia Steitz, a successful romance writer, is flabbergasted when Rudi Singlewood shows up at one of her book signings and initiates a summer romance. She worries that the fantasies she’s harbored regarding the world-renown Broadway actress may prevent her from accepting who Rudi really is. She relates her fears to her best friend, Marcia Struthers, a successful Manhattan litigator.

Knowing that Patricia has dreamed of Rudi for years, Marcia urges her to give the actress a chance by getting to know who she is behind her public persona. While working a high-profile case, Marcia must confront her resurging feelings for lead opposing counsel, Lexie Yamin, and the appearance of an unrequited love. All is not as it seems, however, as Marcia deals with unexpected physical changes and developing mental abilities after an encounter with a meteorite. Marcia’s not the only one dealing with changes induced by an extraterrestrial rock, though.

Kiernan Connelly, who has received intriguing letters over several months, begins to question her lifestyle. Her casual sexual relationship with Rudi and passable acting career no longer fulfill her. As Kiernan makes changes in her life, she finds herself dealing with the strange reality of being able to hear others’ thoughts. Could it be related to her close encounter with a meteorite?

Riding Shotgun with DRB: NaNo prep with Andi Marquette

September 25, 2018

In this episode of Riding Shotgun with Dirt Road Books, Jove Belle chats with Andi Marquette about all things NaNoWriMo. Specifically, Andi drops some hints and tips to help authors prep for a successful challenge. And, because she's awesome like that, she provided some magic linky-links to some handy resources. Enjoy!

Andi’s tips for NaNoWriMo prep!

  • register (org)
  • set a schedule (write it down or put it in a reminder app)
  • find your regular writing space
  • tell your friends and family what you’ll be doing in November
  • start organizing your thoughts with regard to your project

And have a look at these links:

Chuck Wendig’s 25 tips for NaNoWriMo writing (Chuck is irreverent and engages in swearage, if you’re of the faint of heart, but he is spot-on with his mentoring and advice).

And check all the tons of resources at the NaNoWriMo site

For organizing the nuts and bolts of your novel:

If you’re visual and like mind mapping try the MindNode app/platform (alternatives to MindNode for PC HERE). If you’re more a list-y person, try Trello. Or go ol’ skool and use a white board or the J.K. Rowling method, which is to use notebook paper.

Remember, this is about learning your process, getting some words written for a draft of a novel, meeting new people, learning new things, and having fun!
